Introduction to Galatians (Serendipity Bible Third Edition)
Author: The apostle Paul
Date: Two possible dates have been proposed depending upon whether Paul is writing to congregations in North or South Galatia. If the first date is correct (between A.D. 48-50) then this is the earliest surviving letter of Paul. The second date, A.D. 51-53 places this work closer to the writing of Romans with which Galatians shares a close thematic connection.
Theme: Justification by faith alone.
Historical Background: Paul founded the churches in Galatia during his first missionary journey, After leaving the area, apparently some Jewish Christians arrived. Accusing Paul of omitting crucial parts of the Gospel, they said that the Galatians needed to submit to Jewish law and customs, (such as circumcision) in order to be truly Christian. Although Paul was willing to accommodate Jewish sensitivities, he vehemently opposed this as a requirement. This letter is a ringing declaration that salvation is God’s free gift, and a hard-hitting rejection of any hint that it must – or can – somehow be earned.
Characteristics: Paul’s passion for Christ and the Gospel are evident in his anger and surprise at the Galatians’ acceptance of these false teachers. Galatians is like a rough-hewn Romans. Whereas the argument for justification by faith in that letter is carefull developed and calmly logical, Galatians is an emotionally charged response to a challenge that Paul felt very deeply.
